LOLU™ HEALTH · PHASE I · MODULE 07

Understand metabolism beyond “burning calories”.

After a meal, between meals and during an overnight fast, the body faces different demands. What connects the food you eat with energy storage and cellular work? This module gives you the concepts to examine those processes rather than relying on a single “metabolism boosting” claim.

What Is Metabolism? From Food to Life

Module 07 of LOLU Health’s Holistic Nutrition Training Program connects anabolism, catabolism and ATP with the reactions underlying metabolism. It then explores energy storage, macronutrient synthesis, hormonal regulation, and the effects of feeding and fasting.

9 lessons1 practice assignment1 final test

Connect meals with the body’s metabolic processes

You may hear that a product “burns fat”, that fasting changes metabolism, or that hormones determine how food is used. These statements raise different questions. This module organises the discussion around reactions, energy transfer, storage and regulation.

The early lessons establish anabolism and catabolism, ATP, and condensation, hydrolysis, phosphorylation and oxidation–reduction reactions. They provide the vocabulary to follow what is being built, broken down or transferred.

Later lessons connect this foundation with storage, synthesis and hormonal regulation, then compare feeding and fasting. The practical debate on carnitine supplements brings the framework into the evaluation of a familiar fat-burning claim.

Your learning pathway

Begin with the introduction, work through nine lessons, complete the two-hour practical debate and then take the module final test.

Introduction · Estimated reading: 5 minutes
Identify the module’s questions about metabolic processes and why understanding them matters for nutrition.

LESSON 01 · ESTIMATED READING: 15 MINUTES

Anabolism and Catabolism: Energy Required or Released

Distinguish building processes from breakdown processes and connect them with energy requirements or release. When the word “metabolism” appears in everyday advice, these concepts help you identify which process is actually being discussed.

LESSON 02 · ESTIMATED READING: 20 MINUTES

ATP and the Work of Body Cells

Introduce adenosine triphosphate, or ATP, and its place in cellular energy use. Connect energy from food with the course’s discussion of cellular work. This provides a bridge between nutrient knowledge and metabolic reactions.

LESSON 03 · ESTIMATED READING: 20 MINUTES

Condensation and Hydrolysis: The Role of Water

Explore the reactions in which water is involved as molecules are joined or broken down. Establish the terminology needed to follow the later metabolic topics. Think of these reactions as part of the framework connecting food components with processing inside the body.

LESSON 04 · ESTIMATED READING: 20 MINUTES

Phosphorylation: Phosphate Transfer

Introduce phosphorylation and the transfer of phosphate groups. Connect this reaction vocabulary with the earlier ATP lesson and the wider topic of metabolic energy transfer. Learn to recognise a process rather than only memorise a term.

LESSON 05 · ESTIMATED READING: 20 MINUTES

Oxidation–Reduction: Electron Transfer

Introduce oxidation–reduction reactions through the exchange of electrons. Place this concept alongside the other reaction types in the module. Together, they create a clearer basis for understanding the language used to describe metabolism.

LESSON 06 · ESTIMATED READING: 20 MINUTES

How Is Energy Stored?

Move from energy transfer to storage. Explore the question of how the body stores energy and connect it with the macronutrients studied earlier. This helps distinguish energy being available for use from energy being retained for later.

LESSON 07 · ESTIMATED READING: 20 MINUTES

How Are Macronutrients Synthesised?

Consider how macronutrient synthesis fits into the metabolic framework. Return to the concept of anabolism and connect it with the earlier carbohydrate, lipid and protein modules. The lesson brings nutrient categories into the discussion of metabolic pathways.

LESSON 08 · ESTIMATED READING: 20 MINUTES

What Hormones Regulate Metabolism?

Introduce hormonal regulation as a way to understand how metabolic processes are coordinated. Link regulation with storage and synthesis, preparing for the next lesson on feeding and fasting. Move beyond an isolated hormone claim towards the process being regulated.

LESSON 09 · ESTIMATED READING: 20 MINUTES

How Do Feeding and Fasting Affect Metabolism?

Compare the fed and fasting states within the concepts already learned. Connect these states with energy use, storage and regulation; the module’s learning aims also include ketone formation and differences in macronutrient catabolism. Use this framework to ask more precise questions about fasting claims.

Practice and assessment

Practice Homework 1: Carnitine Supplements—A Fat-Burning Miracle?

Take part in the course’s debate about carnitine supplements. Use the metabolic concepts to examine the question and its supporting arguments, rather than treat the wording as a confirmed benefit. Estimated practical homework time: 2 hours.

Module Final Test

Complete the final test after the lessons and practical debate. Estimated completion time: 25 minutes.

Plan your study time

The introduction and nine lessons have a combined estimated reading time of 180 minutes. Add approximately 2 hours for the practical homework and 25 minutes for the final test: a published estimated total of 5 hours 25 minutes. Actual study time may vary.

What this module helps you understand

  • The distinction between metabolism, anabolism and catabolism, and the place of ATP.
  • The reaction vocabulary behind molecular breakdown, synthesis and energy transfer.
  • How energy storage and macronutrient synthesis connect with hormonal regulation.
  • How feeding and fasting frame questions about nutrient use, ketone formation and metabolic claims.

Who is this module for?

This module is suited to learners who want to connect the earlier nutrient lessons into an understanding of metabolism. It is relevant when reading claims about energy, fasting, hormones or fat-burning supplements and seeking clearer physiological reasoning.

It also provides a foundation for deeper study of nutrition and metabolic pathways. The emphasis is on identifying the process, understanding its context and examining claims through an organised framework.

Build the framework behind metabolic reasoning.

Choose Module 07 to connect reactions, energy storage and regulation, then apply the concepts in the carnitine debate. Develop a more precise vocabulary for understanding what happens between eating food and sustaining cellular activity.
