LOLU™ HEALTH · PHASE I · MODULE 02
Connect what you eat with how your body uses it.
Two products make similar health claims, yet their nutrition panels tell different stories. A restaurant meal needs to fit into your usual eating pattern. After eating, how does food become nutrients your body can absorb? These questions connect food choices with digestive physiology.
We Are What We Eat: Design a Holistic Nutritional Diet
Module 02 of LOLU Health’s Holistic Nutrition Training Program connects practical diet planning with an introduction to digestion, nutrient absorption and transport. Learn to consider food labels, eating environments and individual needs alongside what happens to food inside the body.
From the supermarket shelf to the digestive system
You may recognise a healthy eating message but still find it difficult to apply when shopping, eating out or adjusting to a different food culture. This module places those situations within a broader approach to dietary planning, rather than treating one food or one nutrient as the whole answer.
The first part introduces a holistic nutritional diet, nutrition panels, eating out and the influences behind food preferences. The two practical assignments focus on evaluating label claims and using the course’s food guide, giving the concepts a place in everyday decisions.
The second part follows food through digestion and into nutrient absorption and transport. It then considers how digestion is coordinated and the disorders related to digestion, absorption and elimination. Together, these topics connect the meal on your plate with the processes that make its nutrients available to the body.
Your learning pathway
Begin with the introduction, complete Lessons 01–03 and the two practical assignments, then continue through Lessons 04–09 before the final test.
Introduction · Estimated reading: 5 minutes
Orient yourself to the module’s questions about diet quality, individual needs and the tools used to plan food choices.
LESSON 01 · ESTIMATED READING: 15 MINUTES
What Is a Holistic Nutritional Diet?
What does a healthy diet mean when needs, preferences and cultural practices differ? Explore a broader framework for dietary planning and the place of food guides and dietary guidance. Consider the whole eating pattern when thinking about meals at home, on campus or in a new food environment.
LESSON 02 · ESTIMATED READING: 20 MINUTES
How to Read and Use the Nutrition Facts Panel on Food Packaging
A front-of-pack claim is only one part of a product’s story. Learn to read and use the nutrition panel as a tool for understanding packaged foods. This lesson supports more informed comparisons when several products appear to offer similar benefits.
LESSON 03 · ESTIMATED READING: 20 MINUTES
Can Eating Out Be Part of a Holistic Nutritional Diet?
Restaurant meals and social occasions are part of everyday life. Explore how eating out can be considered within a broader dietary pattern. Bring the principles of diet planning into situations where you do not prepare every meal yourself.
Practice and assessment
Practice Homework 1: Nutrition Label Activity
How do health claims on food labels measure up? Apply the label-reading topic in a practical activity. Estimated completion time: 2 hours.
Practice Homework 2: How to Use Our Food Guide?
Apply the course’s food guide as a tool for planning food choices. Estimated completion time: 2 hours. These assignments appear after Lesson 03 in the published learning sequence.
LESSON 04 · ESTIMATED READING: 20 MINUTES
Why Do We Want to Eat the Food We Want to Eat?
Why does a familiar meal feel appealing, while another choice does not? Explore the question of food preferences and the influences behind what we want to eat. Connect the discussion with daily routines, cultural practices and the choices available in your environment.
LESSON 05 · ESTIMATED READING: 20 MINUTES
What Happens to the Food We Eat?
Follow the journey from eating a meal to processing its contents within the digestive system. Build an overview of digestion that helps you connect familiar foods with the stages that follow a mouthful. This provides context for the more detailed lessons on chemical digestion and absorption.
LESSON 06 · ESTIMATED READING: 20 MINUTES
How Does the Body Accomplish Chemical Digestion?
Eating food and making its nutrients available are different steps. Explore chemical digestion and the processes that break food down. Develop the vocabulary needed to understand the transition from food components to substances that can be absorbed.
LESSON 07 · ESTIMATED READING: 20 MINUTES
How Does the Body Absorb and Transport Digested Nutrients?
Once food has been digested, what happens next? Introduce nutrient absorption and transport, connecting the digestive process with the movement of nutrients within the body. This lesson helps you distinguish breaking food down from absorbing and transporting its nutrients.
LESSON 08 · ESTIMATED READING: 20 MINUTES
How Does the Body Coordinate and Regulate Digestion?
Digestion involves coordinated processes rather than isolated steps. Explore how the body regulates digestive activity and brings its different stages together. Place the earlier lessons on digestion and absorption within a more integrated physiological framework.
LESSON 09 · ESTIMATED READING: 20 MINUTES
What Disorders Are Related to Digestion, Absorption, and Elimination?
Consider disorders in relation to the digestive stage involved: digestion, absorption or elimination. This introductory perspective gives you a more organised way to approach the topic, building on normal digestive processes before examining what may be disrupted.
Module Final Test
Complete the module final test after Lesson 09. Estimated completion time: 25 minutes.
Plan your study time
The introduction and nine lessons have a combined estimated reading time of 180 minutes. Allow a further 4 hours for the two practical assignments and 25 minutes for the final test: approximately 7 hours 25 minutes in total, based on the published estimates. Actual study time may vary.
What this module helps you understand
- How to approach diet planning while considering individual needs, preferences and food culture.
- How nutrition panels, food guides and eating-out decisions fit into practical food selection.
- The distinction between chemical digestion, nutrient absorption and nutrient transport.
- How digestive regulation and disorders relate to the stages of digestion, absorption and elimination.
Who is this module for?
This module is suited to learners who want to move from basic nutrient knowledge to practical food choices and digestive physiology. It is relevant to people comparing packaged foods, planning family meals or navigating restaurant and cafeteria options.
It also offers a structured introduction for learners preparing to study nutrition and metabolism in greater depth. The emphasis is on understanding the concepts and applying food-planning tools, while linking choices with the body’s digestive processes.
Build a clearer connection between food choices and digestion.
Choose Module 02 to develop your understanding of dietary planning, food labels and the journey from eating food to absorbing nutrients. Bring practical choices and physiological reasoning into the same learning framework.
