LOLU™ HEALTH · PHASE I · MODULE 01
Make sense of everyday food choices.
What makes a breakfast balanced? Why can two people need different amounts of food? How do you judge a nutrition recommendation when different sources give different answers?
Introduction to Nutrition and Digestive Health is the starting point of LOLU Health’s Holistic Nutrition Training Program. Build a foundation in nutrients, food choices, energy needs and nutrition assessment, so you can approach everyday nutrition questions with clearer reasoning.
Bring nutrition knowledge into real-life decisions
At the supermarket, you compare products labelled “healthy”. At home, you plan meals around preferences, routines and family traditions. At a shared dinner, enjoyment and social connection matter too. Understanding nutrition means learning how to consider these influences alongside what food provides.
This module introduces the nutrients found in foods and the body, including carbohydrate, fat, protein, vitamins, minerals and water. It connects those foundations with the way nutrient and energy recommendations are established, used and compared.
The practical value is a framework you can keep building on: identify the nutritional question, understand the concepts behind it and recognise what information is needed before drawing a conclusion. These are the foundations for the more detailed nutrient and metabolism topics in later Phase I modules.
Your learning pathway
Begin with a short introduction, then work through five lessons, two practice homework assignments and a module final test.
Introduction · Estimated reading: 5 minutes
Orient yourself to the module and the place of nutrition in everyday life.
LESSON 01 · ESTIMATED READING: 15 MINUTES
Food Choices
Why do we reach for certain foods? Explore food choices in the context of enjoyment, traditions and personal associations. Consider the challenge of bringing favourite foods and social occasions together with nutritional balance—a question that applies directly to family meals, celebrations and everyday routines.
LESSON 02 · ESTIMATED READING: 45 MINUTES
Importance of Nutrition
Build your understanding of nutrients in food and the body. Introduce the energy-yielding nutrients—carbohydrate, fat and protein—alongside vitamins, minerals and water. This vocabulary gives you a starting point for understanding what a food contributes and for studying individual nutrients in greater depth.
LESSON 03 · ESTIMATED READING: 20 MINUTES
Establishing Nutrient Recommendations
What does a recommended intake mean, and how should you use it? Introduce Dietary Reference Intakes and the principles behind nutrient recommendations. Learn to think about how recommendations are established, applied and compared when interpreting nutrition information.
LESSON 04 · ESTIMATED READING: 20 MINUTES
Establishing Energy Recommendations
When someone quotes a daily calorie target, what is the basis for that number? Explore how energy recommendations are established and how they relate to the energy-yielding nutrients introduced earlier. Build the concepts needed to ask more informed questions about dietary energy.
LESSON 05 · ESTIMATED READING: 20 MINUTES
Nutrition Assessment
What needs to be understood about a person before discussing their nutrition? Introduce nutrition assessment as the next step in organising information and understanding nutritional status. This lesson brings the module towards a more structured approach to nutrition questions.
Practice and assessment
The module includes Practice Homework 1 and Practice Homework 2, each listed with an estimated completion time of one day, followed by a Module Final Test with an estimated completion time of 25 minutes.
Plan your study time
The introduction and five lessons have a combined estimated reading time of 125 minutes. Allow a further 25 minutes for the final test, plus separate time for both homework assignments. These are the module’s published estimates; your actual study time may vary.
What this foundation helps you understand
- How everyday food choices relate to nutrition, enjoyment, traditions and dietary balance.
- The major nutrient groups and the distinction between energy-yielding nutrients, vitamins, minerals and water.
- The purpose of nutrient and energy recommendations, and the questions to consider when using or comparing them.
- Why nutrition assessment belongs within a structured approach to understanding nutritional needs.
Who is this module for?
This introductory module is suited to people who want to organise their nutrition knowledge from the beginning: individuals interested in understanding their own food choices, parents and caregivers thinking about family meals, and learners preparing to study nutrients and metabolism in greater depth.
If you frequently encounter conflicting nutrition advice and want a more systematic way to approach it, Module 01 gives you the concepts and vocabulary to begin. It establishes a foundation for continued learning across Phase I.
Start with the knowledge behind your food choices.
Choose Module 01 as the first step in understanding nutrients, nutritional recommendations and assessment. Build the framework that connects the rest of your nutrition learning.
