LOLU™ HEALTH · PHASE I · MODULE 10

Understand eating behaviours with greater care and clarity.

A friend repeatedly expresses distress about food, a family conversation centres on dieting, or an athlete’s eating pattern raises concern. What questions should you ask, and how can you discuss the topic without judgement? This module introduces a framework for understanding disordered eating and supportive communication.

In Depth: Disordered Eating and Mindful Eating

Module 10 of LOLU Health’s Holistic Nutrition Training Program explores the continuum of eating behaviours, contributing factors, selected eating disorders, the female athlete triad and multidisciplinary treatment. A practical assignment focuses on talking to someone about disordered eating.

8 lessons1 practice assignment1 final test

Connect nutrition knowledge with the human context of eating

Everyday conversations about dieting can overlook the person’s experience. This module starts with eating behaviours as a continuum, then examines multiple contributing factors. It offers terminology for discussing concerns without reducing them to appearance or a single food choice.

The condition-specific lessons cover anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder and night-eating syndrome. They then introduce the female athlete triad and the need for a multidisciplinary approach to treatment.

The practical value is a more organised way to understand the course topics and approach a conversation. The module provides education about eating behaviours; it does not establish a learner’s ability to diagnose or treat an eating disorder. The published outline focuses on these topics and does not specify a separate guided mindful-eating exercise.

Your learning pathway

Begin with the introduction, complete eight lessons and the communication assignment, then take the module final test.

Introduction · Estimated reading: 5 minutes
Frame the questions about dieting, warning signs and how to approach a concern about someone’s eating behaviours.

LESSON 01 · ESTIMATED READING: 15 MINUTES

Eating Behaviours Occur on a Continuum

Introduce the continuum described in the course. Consider why understanding eating behaviours requires more than a simple “normal or abnormal” label. This provides the starting point for the later discussion of contributing factors and specific conditions.

LESSON 02 · ESTIMATED READING: 20 MINUTES

Many Factors Contribute to Disordered Eating

Explore the course’s emphasis on multiple contributing factors. Connect behaviours with their context rather than assume one cause from one observation. Build a foundation for approaching the later lessons with more careful questions.

LESSON 03 · ESTIMATED READING: 20 MINUTES

Anorexia Nervosa and Its Serious Health Implications

Introduce anorexia nervosa as the focus of this lesson and examine the course’s discussion of its seriousness. Distinguish understanding a condition from judging someone’s behaviour. The topic prepares learners for the later emphasis on treatment and professional support.

LESSON 04 · ESTIMATED READING: 20 MINUTES

Bulimia Nervosa: Binge Eating and Compensatory Behaviours

Study the bulimia nervosa topic, including the binge-eating and purging patterns named in the outline. Develop terminology to distinguish this lesson from other eating-disorder topics without turning the description into a checklist for diagnosing another person.

LESSON 05 · ESTIMATED READING: 20 MINUTES

Binge-Eating Disorder

Introduce the course’s lesson on binge-eating disorder and its implications. Consider the eating behaviour and health topic rather than focus solely on the weight-related wording in the original lesson title. Keep the condition distinct from the preceding bulimia topic.

LESSON 06 · ESTIMATED READING: 20 MINUTES

Night-Eating Syndrome

Explore night-eating syndrome as a separate topic in the course. Place it alongside the earlier lessons on eating behaviours and context. Build vocabulary for understanding the subject rather than interpreting the timing of one meal as a diagnosis.

LESSON 07 · ESTIMATED READING: 20 MINUTES

The Female Athlete Triad

Introduce the interconnected themes of energy availability, menstrual function and bone health within the female athlete triad. Relate the topic to the module’s focus on eating and athletic contexts, and prepare for the following discussion of multidisciplinary care.

LESSON 08 · ESTIMATED READING: 20 MINUTES

Treatment Requires a Multidisciplinary Approach

Examine the course’s emphasis on multidisciplinary treatment. Understand why recognising a concern and having a supportive conversation are different from providing treatment. This lesson connects the condition-specific topics with the roles of professional care.

Practice and assessment

Practice Homework 1: Talking to Someone About Disordered Eating

Apply the module’s communication focus to a practical assignment. Consider how to discuss a concern with care and without judgement, while recognising the distinction between support and treatment. Published estimated completion time: 1 day.

Module Final Test

Complete the final test after the lessons and assignment. Estimated completion time: 25 minutes.

Plan your study time

The introduction and eight lessons have a combined estimated reading time of 160 minutes. Add 25 minutes for the final test: approximately 3 hours 5 minutes for reading and testing. Allow separate time for the assignment, listed as 1 day. Actual study time may vary.

What this module helps you understand

  • The continuum of eating behaviours and the importance of considering multiple contributing factors.
  • The selected eating-disorder and night-eating topics included in the course.
  • The female athlete triad and the course’s emphasis on multidisciplinary treatment.
  • How to approach the communication assignment with a clearer distinction between concern, support and professional care.

Who is this module for?

This module is suited to learners seeking a more informed, non-judgemental understanding of eating behaviours. It is relevant to people studying nutrition or considering how food-related conversations arise in families, friendships and sporting environments.

It also builds a foundation for further learning about nutrition and eating-disorder care. The emphasis is on concepts and communication, with appropriate recognition of the professional roles involved in treatment.

Build a thoughtful foundation for understanding eating behaviours.

Choose Module 10 to organise the key concepts, study the condition-specific topics and practise approaching a sensitive conversation. Consolidate your understanding of the educational and professional-care distinctions in the final test.
